There are so many individual awards for college football that keeping track of them all requires a web site. And sometimes a worthy candidate can fall through the cracks as the ballots move from preseason watch lists to semifinalists to finalists.

That's what has happened to Missouri senior wide receiver Danario Alexander. He's on pace to set several single-season records for the Tigers, he's tied for fifth in receptions per game and tied for third in receiving yards per game in NCAA statistics. He is the only player in the Football Bowl Subdivision with two games with 200 receiving yards or more in 2009 plus he is one of only two players in 2009 with two TD receptions of 80 yards or more.

"His numbers speak for themselves," Missouri coach Gary Pinkel said Monday. "His name should certainly be up for All-American if it's not already. ... I have great respect for the players in our league ... but his numbers are really, really outstanding."

Yet Alexander is not one of the 10 semifinalists for the Biletnikoff Award that goes to the nation's best receiver. Two Big 12 players - Jordan Shipley of Texas and Dez Briscoe of Kansas - are on the list for the award. Three of the 10 players listed have been sidelined by injury or have left their team.

Missouri assistant athletic director/media relations Chad Moller is campaigning to make sure Alexander becomes a write-in candidate for the award. The Biletnikoff voters will vote this week to determine the three finalists for the award.

"I'd certainly prefer that Danario's name be on the ballot, but at least we do have a chance to advance, and there is precedent for something like that to potentially happen," he said. "I'm doing my best to make sure they understand his back story and just how neat of a story he has to offer. What he's done to overcome all of his injuries has been nothing short of amazing, and I hope that I can convince enough committee members to compel them to add him to their ballots."

In 2007 Texas Tech freshman wide receiver Michael Crabtree won the award as a write-in candidate.

Alexander was named the Big 12's offensive player of the week Monday after his performance against Kansas State - 10 receptions, 200 yards, three touchdowns. It's the second time he has won the award this season making him the first receiver in Big 12 history with two POY honors. Since the Conference's inception in 1996, 10 receivers have won the offensive award but none had ever been honored twice.

Alexander, though, is far and away the best big-play receiver. He's averaging 44.7 yards on his 11 TD grabs with four touchdown receptions covering 70 or more yards. None of the other five receivers with double figures in TD receptions have any TD catches that have covered 70 yards.
