Daniel Thomas (Kansas State), Kendall Hunter (Oklahoma State), Aldon Smith (Missouri), Keenan Robinson (Texas), Anthony Cantele (Kansas State) and Tress Way (Oklahoma) have been named the first 2010 Big 12 Conference Football Players of the Week, as selected by a media panel. Each was honored for the first time.
Big 12 Co-Offensive Players of the Week
Daniel Thomas, Kansas State, RB, Sr, Hilliard, Fla.
Daniel Thomas ran for a career-high 234 yards and two scores to lead Kansas State to a 31-22 win over UCLA. He set a K-State record for rushing yards in a season opener and also tallied the fifth-most rushing yards in KSU single-game history. Thomas' 234 rushing yards were the most surrendered by a UCLA defense since 2005. The Hilliard, Fla., senior averaged 8.4 yards a carry and had a career-long run of 44 yards. His performance was the 12th 200-plus yard game in school history.
Kendall Hunter, Oklahoma State, RB, Sr, Tyler, Texas
Kendall Hunter ran for 257 yards on 21 attempts for an average of 12.2 per rush against Washington State. His rushing total is the best in the country through the first weekend of play. Hunter became the first Cowboy since Barry Sanders (1988) to run for 200 yards (208) in a half. He added four rushing touchdowns, which is second only to Sanders for a single-game at OSU. The senior had six runs of at least 17 yards, including a touchdown run of 39 yards and a 66-yard run to the 1-yard-line.
Big 12 Co-Defensive Players of the Week
Aldon Smith, Missouri, DE, So, Raytown, Mo.
Aldon Smith tallied a career-high 10 tackles, three tackles for loss (12 yards) and two quarterback sacks (9 yards) in Missouri's come-from-behind win over Illinois. He also added a quarterback hurry as the Tigers held the Illini scoreless in the second half and allowed just 85 yards of offense in the final period.
Keenan Robinson, Texas, LB, Jr, Plano, Texas
Keenan Robinson posted six tackles, a tackle-for loss, recovered a fumble that he returned for a touchdown and intercepted a pass in Texas' 34-17 win at Rice. His first-quarter interception set up a field goal that tied the game at 3-3. Robinson then recovered a fumble and returned it for a score to extend the Horns' lead to 17-3 late in the second quarter. He led a UT defense that held Rice to 219 yards of total offense and just 88 rushing.
Big 12 Co-Special Teams Players of the Week
Anthony Cantele, Kansas State, PK, So, Wichita, Kan.
Making his collegiate debut, walk-on kicker Anthony Cantele boomed four of his six kickoffs through the end zone for touchbacks and was 4-of-4 in PAT's. He also hit his only field goal attempt of the afternoon, a 35-yarder in the third quarter that gave the Wildcats a 17-13 lead they would not relinquish. Cantele learned he would be taking over kicking duties just hours before the game started.
Tress Way, Oklahoma, P, So, Tulsa, Okla.
Tress Way launched eight punts for an average of 46.6 yards with three downed inside the 20. He boomed an 85-yarder, which was the longest in Big 12 history and the third-best in OU history. It was the longest punt for the Sooners since 1970. Way also kicked off six times. Utah State's average return was 21.8 yards and its average starting field position was its own 25-yard line.
