Seven Big 12 Men?s Golf Teams Begin Regional Play

Seven Big 12 men’s golf teams began their run at the NCAA Championship with first round play getting underway at regional sites around country.

Big 12 Champion Texas began play at the Rawls Golf Course in Lubbock Texas and worked their way to a round one lead. Sophomore Beau Hossler led the Longhorns after making seven birdies and one bogey for a 66 to tie for second. As a team, Texas shot 273 (-11) and leads runner-up Houston by one stroke. Playing at home, Tech took advantage of several early birdies that gave the Red Raiders a share of the lead for portions of the front nine before finishing the day in fourth place just five strokes back of opening-round leader Texas.

All five Horned Frogs carded rounds of par or better as the TCU men’s golf team opened play at the NCAA Washington Regional on Thursday at Gold Mountain Golf Club and sit just one stroke off the lead. The Horned Frogs sit in a tie for second following a 7-under round of 281, just one stroke behind No. 30 UAB. TCU led the field of 14 for the majority of the day before the Blazers surged ahead to close the first round. The No. 43 Iowa State men’s golf team is tied for fourth place after firing a 287 in the first round in Washington. The Cyclones were led by senior Sam Daley, who is in a tie for eighth after carding a first-round 70. Daley’s round was filled with four birdies and just two bogies (-2). The Baylor men’s golf team shot 5-over-par 293 in Thursday’s opening round at the NCAA Bremerton Regional, and the Bears are in 10th place heading to Friday’s second round.

With a 4-under-par 284, the 14th-ranked Oklahoma men’s golf team holds a five-stroke lead after the first round at the NCAA San Diego Regional in San Diego, Calif. The Sooners, who are the event’s No. 3 seed, started the round on the first tee and posted the only under-par mark of the day. Three Sooners finished the round within the top six on the leaderboard, led by freshman Grant Hirschman. After carding a bogey-free 69 (-3), Hirschman is tied for first place out of 75 competitors.

Oklahoma State’s men’s golf team opened play at the NCAA New Haven Regional on Thursday with a 286 total to stand alone in fifth place at The Course at Yale. The Cowboys’ 6-over score put them a shot behind Vanderbilt for fourth place at the par-70, 6,803-yard layout. South Florida finished as the leader after the first day of action, posting a 281 to stand a shot clear of Ohio State. San Diego State posted a 284 to wrap up the day in third place.

Regional play in all of the regional sites will continue tomorrow with second round action set to begin as early as 7:20 a.m. CT.
