No. 2 Texas Men’s Golf advanced to the NCAA Championship match play quarterfinals finishing in the top eight after 72 holes on Monday while TCU finished its season with a 10th-place finish.
Freshman Doug Ghim led the Longhorns with three rounds at or under par, including a fourth-round 71 to tie for eighth. Ghim finished in the top-10 in back-to-back tournaments and in the top 20 in the last four. Sophomore Beau Hossler also shot a 71 on the fourth round to finish 10th. He posted seven top-10 finishes and did not finish outside the top 20 all season. Freshman Scottie Scheffler carded even par to finish in a tie for 33, while sophomore Gavin Hall posted a fourth-round 70 and senior Kramer Hickok a 75.
The Horned Frogs carded an 11-over 299 on their final trip through the course, missing the match play portion of the NCAA Championship by seven strokes. TCU began the day in 10th and came as close as four strokes from the cutline before play was halted on the back nine due to lightning. TCU, which entered the tournament as the No. 23 seed, earned its fourth top-10 finish in program history at the NCAA Championship and the first since 2009.
NCAA Championship match play will begin tomorrow with the Horns set to square off with Southern California at 6:50 a.m. CT with the winner advancing to the championship semifinals.
