Gutierrez & Tolson, Plus Cowboy Pair, Win Final Weekly Awards of 2016

Quality performances to close out the regular season give Corey Hassel (Oklahoma State), Eric Gutierrez (Texas Tech), Drew Tolson (Baylor) and J.R. Davis (Oklahoma State) the final Big 12 baseball weekly award distinctions of the 2016 season.

Hassel and Gutierrez are Co-Players of the Week, as Hassel earns his first such honor and Gutierrez claims his fifth career Player of the Week and second this season. The five career honors are a Big 12 record as Gutierrez surpasses Ken Harvey of Nebraska for the most conference career weekly accolades.

Tolson is a first-time Pitcher of the Week winner, while Davis wins his second Newcomer of the Week this year. The Cowboys finish the season with 12 combined weekly awards, setting a single-season conference record.

CO-PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Corey Hassel, Oklahoma State, Sr., OF, Stillwater, Okla./Stillwater
Hassel led Oklahoma State to a 3-1 record last week that included a series sweep of Kansas to conclude the regular season. The senior right fielder recorded a .400 batting average, which tied for the team lead, as he went 6-for-15 at the plate with two home runs, a triple and four RBI. He also collected a league-high 14 total bases and was second with a .933 slugging percentage. Hassel hit safely in all four games, including a pair of multi-hit efforts, to extend his hitting streak to six games, as he has also reached base safely in 12-straight games. He picked up a pair of sacrifice bunts that both led to scores, and he collected an assist in Wednesday’s game at Oral Roberts by gunning down a runner at home plate from right field to end the sixth inning in a two-run game. In the series sweep of KU, Hassel was 5-for-12 at the plate with two homers, a triple and four RBI. He also scored four runs and recorded a 1.083 slugging percentage to help the Cowboys secure a second-place league finish.

Eric Gutierrez, Texas Tech, Sr., 1B, Mission, Texas/Sharyland
Gutierrez hit .455 overall (5-for-11) over the course of the West Virginia series, leading No. 5 Texas Tech to its seventh Big 12 series win of the season, which also helped push the Big 12 regular-season champions to the 40-win mark for the 13th time in program history. The senior recorded a hit in all three games of the series as he connected on his team-leading 12th home run of the season and also drove in a pair of runs. He capped the series by going 3-for-5 in Saturday’s finale, which marked his 19th multi-hit game of the season. It was also his seventh in Big 12 play alone, which leads all conference players. Gutierrez also finished with the league highs in RBI (23), total bases (62) and slugging percentage (.729) during Big 12 play.

PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Drew Tolson, Baylor, Jr., RHP, Houston, Texas/Memorial
Tolson recorded a significant performance on Thursday at Texas in the series opener as he tossed a season-high eight innings to up his career-high win total to six as he allowed one run on six hits with no walks and three strikeouts. He retired the first nine batters of the game and 16 of the first 17. His effort helped Baylor secure a spot in the Big 12 Championship for the 20th straight season.

NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK
J.R. Davis, Oklahoma State, Jr., 2B, Vallejo, Calif./Contra Costa
Davis had a standout week at the plate as Oklahoma State’s leadoff hitter led the Cowboys to a 3-1 mark, which included a series sweep of Kansas. The California native hit .400 (6-for-15), tying for the team high, and collected a double, three RBI, three walks, four runs and a stolen base while extending a streak of reaching base safely to 13 games. In a midweek game at Oral Roberts, Davis reached base safely four times on the strength of a career-high three walks and a hit by pitch, and he followed that with a weekend that saw him emerge as OSU’s leading hitter against Kansas. Against KU, he was 6-for-14 (.429) with a double and three RBI while also recording multiple hits in the final two games, including a 3-for-5, two-RBI effort in the finale. He also played error-free ball and recorded six assists and four putouts.
