Kansas catcher Jaxx Groshans took home Big 12 Baseball Player of the Week honors, while Texas right-hander Bryce Elder was tabbed Pitcher of the Week. TCU freshman outfielder Porter Brown was named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week. A five-person media panel selects the weekly award winners.
Groshans reached base seven times in 13 plate appearances, including four hits and three walks during the Jayhawks’ season-opening series at USC Upstate. Groshans finished with a league-best three homers and six RBI, while batting .400 (4-for-10) on the weekend.
Elder surrendered just one run and collected nine strikeouts in Texas’ season-opening 3-1 victory at Louisiana. The sophomore allowed four hits and retired 11 consecutive batters from the fifth through eighth innings.
Brown, a freshman from San Antonio, belted seven hits, scored five runs, walked twice and drove in two runs in TCU’s 2-1 weekend at the MLB4 Tournament. Brown went 4-for-5 with three runs and two RBI in the victory over Virginia.
All three winners this week are first-time honorees.
