The 2019 Big 12 Tennis Championship will commence in Lawrence, Kansas, from Thursday-Sunday, April 18-21, with men’s and women’s tennis action sprinkled throughout the weekend.
Action will begin on Thursday, April 18, with women’s tennis as No. 8-seeded Baylor will battle No. 9-seeded Iowa State, while No.7 Kansas State will take on No. 10 West Virginia. Matches are set to begin at 10 a.m. CT, as the winners will then face-off against the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds, respectively, on Friday.
On both the men’s and women’s side, Texas holds steady atop the league with a No. 1 seed going into the championship.
Of the 22 women’s champions crowned at the conference championship, the No. 1 seed has won a total of 17 times, the No. 2 seed two times, the No. 3 seed once and the No. 4 seed twice. No other seed beyond the top four has gone on to win the title.
On the men’s side, through those same 22 years of postseason competition, the top-two seeds are the only two seeds to have won a conference championship (No. 1 seed 14 times and No. 2 seed with eight).
Heading into the 2019 Big 12 Tennis Championship, the Texas women’s team will look to add to its trophy cabinet in search of title No. 11 and its second straight, while No. 2-seeded Oklahoma State will seek to battle for its third. Baylor has won the conference championship eight times, including a tie for the most consecutive titles with six (UT: 1997-2002; BU: 2006-11).
The men’s No. 2-seeded Baylor Bears own the most postseason championship hardware with eight, while Texas, the defending champions, five. No. 3-seeded TCU has won two of the last three championships.
The remaining three days of competition will see action from both men’s and women’s programs alike, as champions will be crowned on Sunday, April 21, in Lawrence. Live stats (Jayhawk Tennis Center and Sports Pavilion Courts) will provided for each of the matches. The matches will also be available via livestream.
