Big 12 co-champions Nebraska and Texas as well as Iowa State earned a trip to the 2008 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship Round of 16 after claiming second-round victories on Saturday.
The fourth-ranked Huskers (29-2) swept UAB 25-14, 25-15, 25-12 to advance to their nation-leading 15th consecutive NCAA Regional appearance at the NU Coliseum. On Friday, Nebraska eliminated Liberty in the first round. The Huskers will face Michigan at 8 p.m. CT on Friday in the Seattle Regional.
Third-seeded Texas (27-3) eliminated Lamar and No. 13 Wichita State on Friday and Saturday, respectively, to advance to regional action for the third straight year, posting a 25-14, 25-18, 25-20 win over the Cardinals. The Longhorns extended their win streak to 11 matches and will play host to the Austin Regional at 6:30 p.m. CT on Friday, facing the winner of the Duke/UCLA second-round match.
Iowa State (21-12) will meet No. 11 Oregon at 4:30 p.m., joining Texas in the Austin Regional. ISU upset No. 6 seed Minnesota, 3-1, on the Gophers’ home court on Saturday. This will mark the Cyclones’ second straight regional appearance. ISU defeated Northern Iowa 3-1 on Friday.
Regional winners will advance to the semifinals and final hosted by the University of Nebraska and the Omaha Sports Commission at Qwest Center Omaha in Omaha, Neb., on Dec. 18 and 20.
