Tale Of Two QBs

DALLAS - Two Texas quarterbacks, two different paths, one destination, one winner, one loser and several records.

Texas Tech's Graham Harrell is from Ennis, Texas, which is about 40 miles from the Cotton Bowl. Jevan Snead of Ole Miss is from Stephenville, Texas, about 100 miles southwest of Dallas. Harrell spent his entire career in Lubbock. Snead attended Texas as a freshman but then transferred.

Harrell ended his record-setting career in Friday's 73rd Cotton Bowl Classic. The outcome, a 47-34 loss, was not what he had envisioned. Snead, a sophomore, provided the passing (292 yards) to the Rebels' balanced attack that produced 515 yards.

"It was just extremely special to be able to come back home and get a win," said Snead, who left Texas after it became clear that fellow freshman Colt McCoy had secured the Longhorns' quarterback gig. "It feels great. I had a lot of family and friends in the stands."

Harrell completed 36 of 58 passes for a Cotton Bowl-record 364 yards. He was intercepted twice and one was returned for a key Ole Miss touchdown. His four touchdowns made him the NCAA's career leader in TD passes with 134.

"It's a huge honor to get that record but it's a compliment to the great players here, the offensive line, all the great receivers," Harrell said.

His yardage total against Ole Miss gave Harrell 5,111 yards in 2008 and made him the first player in NCAA history with two seasons gaining more than 5,000 yards passing.

Cotton briefs
* Harrell's record-setting touchdown pass, fittingly, was caught by sophomore receiver Michael Crabtree. The two-yard slant in the second quarter gave Texas Tech a 21-14 lead and was the 41st time the duo hooked up for a TD.

* Crabtree was limited to just four receptions for 30 yards in what might have been his final game in a Texas Tech uniform. The third-year player is eligible to declare for the NFL Draft. Despite media requests, Texas Tech coaches declined to make Crabtree available for post-game interviews.

* Texas Tech is 2-16 in bowl games played in the state of Texas. The Red Raiders victories in Lone Star State bowls came in the 2003 Houston Bowl and the 1951 Sun Bowl.

* Junior tight end Gerald Harris became the first Ole Miss player with two touchdown catches in a bowl. He finished with two catches for 29 yards.

* The 47 points is the most Ole Miss has ever scored in a bowl game.

* The final game in the expanded Cotton Bowl Stadium drew a record crowd of 88,175. The game moves to the Dallas Cowboys' new stadium next season.
