Baylor's Campbell Earns National Player of the Week Honor
Release: 03/08/2010

Baylor infielder Raynor Campbell was named one of the four Louisville Slugger National Players of the Week, it was announced by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. Campbell also was tabbed the Phillips 66 Big 12 Player of the Week.

The junior from Katy, Texas, hit .500 (12-for-24) with four home runs, three doubles and 17 RBI in Baylor's six games during the week of March 1-7.

Campbell hit safely and drove in at least one run in all six games during the week. He collected at least one RBI in 12 different plate appearances and had five multi-RBI games.

Campbell becomes the first Baylor player to be so honored by Collegiate Baseball since Cory VanAllen won the award on Feb. 16, 2004. He also becomes the only Baylor infielder to ever win a national player of the week award.

With the Bears on a five-game losing streak, and the offense struggling, Campbell was moved into the clean-up spot in the lineup for Saturday's doubleheader. It was the first time he hit fourth in the order since Feb. 13, 2007.

Campbell responded in a big way, going 6-for-9 with three home runs, 10 RBI, four runs scored and two stolen bases as Baylor won each of the last three games of the four-game set with Oral Roberts.

In the second game of Saturday's doubleheader, Campbell gave the Bears an early lead with a two-run homer, then after the Golden Eagles tied the game in the second, he put the Bears on top again with a sacrifice fly. With the Bears behind again the next time he came to the plate, he knocked a RBI single to tie the score, and Baylor went on to win 7-6.

In Sunday's series finale against ORU, Campbell tied the game with a RBI single in the fifth, hit what would prove to be a game-winning, two-run homer in the sixth, and added two insurance runs with another homer in the eighth.

Campbell doubled twice and drove in a pair of runs in Friday's series opener. He went 4-for-10 with five RBI, a double and a home run in Baylor's two midweek games earlier in the week.

The Bears return to action Tuesday at 4 p.m. when they take on Louisiana Tech.
