The Big 12 enters the season with both Oklahoma and Baylor ranked in the USA Today/ESPN and USA Softball preseason polls. The Sooners check in ninth in the NFCA poll and eighth in the ESPN poll, while the Bears are ranked 16th in each.
The Big 12 Conference along with the league's television partners, FOX and ESPN, have announced the Conference's telecast schedule for the 2016 Big 12 softball season. Five regular season games will be featured, all of which will showcase one or both of the conference's preseason NFCA ranked teams in No. 9 Oklahoma and No. 16 Baylor. ESPN2 will televise three of the five games starting with game two of the Texas at Baylor series on Saturday, March 26 at 8:00 p.m. CT. The network will then air the series finale of the Oklahoma at Baylor series on Sunday, April 10 at 2:00 p.m. CT and game two of the Red River Rivalry matchup of Texas at Oklahoma on Saturday, April 16 at 2:00 p.m. CT. FOX Sports Regional Networks will host two games, including the Texas at Baylor series opener on Friday, March 25 at 6:30 p.m. CT. FSN will also carry the Kansas at Oklahoma series finale on Sunday, April 3 at noon CT. Additional television appearances are possible throughout the season through institutional third-tier arrangements. In 2015, over 35 conference games were carried on multiple FOX Sports Regional Networks as well as the Longhorn Network/WatchESPN during the year. Additionally, numerous non-conference home games were available on these networks throughout the season. The USA Today/NFCA Division I Preseason Softball Coaches Poll has been released, with Oklahoma checking in at No. 9 and Baylor at No. 16. Additionally, Texas and Kansas are receiving votes in the initial rankings, giving the conference 57 percent of its teams either ranked or receiving votes.
