Softball Season Begins This Weekend

The Big 12 enters the season with both Oklahoma and Baylor ranked in the USA Today/ESPN and USA Softball preseason polls. The Sooners check in ninth in the NFCA poll and eighth in the ESPN poll, while the Bears are ranked 16th in each. For the seventh time in eight years the Big 12 head softball coaches' preseason polls revealed Oklahoma as the frontrunner for the conference title. The Sooners received five of the seven first place votes, with the other two going to Baylor. The Big 12 Conference has announced it will reinstate its softball championship beginning with the 2017 season. Last held in 2010, the postseason tournament will return to Oklahoma City in a two-day event, Friday, May 12 - Saturday, May 13, 2017. Oklahoma has qualified for six straight Super Regionals, tying Oregon for the second-longest active streak behind Alabama (11). The Sooners enter the 2016 campaign returning six starting position players and two of their top three pitchers, including 2015 All-American Paige Parker (28-7, 1.65 ERA/.394 batting avg.). Iowa State senior Brittany Gomez returns as the conference's leading hitter after boasting a .425 batting average in 2015. OU's Paige Parker is the top returning pitcher after sporting a 1.65 ERA last season. In the 19 seasons of Big 12 softball history, a conference team has qualified for the College World Series in 13. Baylor, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Texas have each made an appearance and Oklahoma has taken home the title twice (2000, 2013).

2016 Big 12 Softball Telecast Schedule Released

The Big 12 Conference along with the league's television partners, FOX and ESPN, have announced the Conference's telecast schedule for the 2016 Big 12 softball season. Five regular season games will be featured, all of which will showcase one or both of the conference's preseason NFCA ranked teams in No. 9 Oklahoma and No. 16 Baylor. ESPN2 will televise three of the five games starting with game two of the Texas at Baylor series on Saturday, March 26 at 8:00 p.m. CT. The network will then air the series finale of the Oklahoma at Baylor series on Sunday, April 10 at 2:00 p.m. CT and game two of the Red River Rivalry matchup of Texas at Oklahoma on Saturday, April 16 at 2:00 p.m. CT. FOX Sports Regional Networks will host two games, including the Texas at Baylor series opener on Friday, March 25 at 6:30 p.m. CT. FSN will also carry the Kansas at Oklahoma series finale on Sunday, April 3 at noon CT. Additional television appearances are possible throughout the season through institutional third-tier arrangements. In 2015, over 35 conference games were carried on multiple FOX Sports Regional Networks as well as the Longhorn Network/WatchESPN during the year. Additionally, numerous non-conference home games were available on these networks throughout the season. OU and BU ranked in NFCA Preseason Poll

The USA Today/NFCA Division I Preseason Softball Coaches Poll has been released, with Oklahoma checking in at No. 9 and Baylor at No. 16. Additionally, Texas and Kansas are receiving votes in the initial rankings, giving the conference 57 percent of its teams either ranked or receiving votes.
