ĎHorns and Bears Repeat With Softball Honors

For the second consecutive week, Baylor and Texas have won the Big 12 weekly softball awards, with the Bears taking home Player of the Week and the Longhorns earning Pitcher of the Week, flipping the script from a week ago. Baylor's Linsey Hays posted a 1.800 OPS at the plate and Texas' Tiarra Davis did not allow an earned run in 14 innings of work on the mound. It marks the third-career weekly honor for Hays and the first for Davis who was named the 2014 Freshman of the Year. Additionally, Hays is a two-time All-Big 12 Second Team selection and Davis earned first team honors in 2014. PLAYER OF THE WEEK Linsey Hays, Baylor, RF, Sr., Brock, Texas Hays swung a hot bat all last week in helping Baylor go 4-0 including a conference series road sweep over Texas Tech. The senior from Brock, Texas was 6-for-12 at the plate with four doubles, two home runs, eight runs scored and seven RBI. Her final double of the weekend was the 49th of her career, a Baylor program record. Hays' numbers were good for a 1.800 OPS for the week (1.333 slugging percentage plus .467 on-base percentage) and she fielded a perfect 1.000 on five attempts. For the year, Hays is tied for the conference lead in doubles with 19 and is second in homers with 13. PITCHER OF THE WEEK Tiarra Davis, Texas, LHP, Jr., Henderson, Texas Davis helped lead the Longhorns to a Big 12 series victory over Kansas this past weekend by posting a perfect 2-0 record with a 0.00 ERA, two complete games, one solo shutout and 15 strikeouts in 14 innings of work. In the opener of a Saturday doubleheader versus the Jayhawks, the Henderson, Texas, native allowed a single unearned run on just three hits and struck out seven in a 3-1 victory. She followed that up in Sunday's finale by scattering five hits and striking out eight for her fourth complete-game shutout of the year. Davis also went 1-for-3 at the plate in the finale as T

The Amateur Softball Association (ASA)/USA Softball has announced the Top 25 Finalists for the 2016 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year, which features Oklahoma's Paige Parker and Texas' Lindsey Stephens. The award will be presented at the opening of the 2016 NCAA Women's College World Series (WCWS) in Oklahoma City. The USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award, which is considered the most prestigious honor in Division I women's collegiate softball, recognizes the outstanding athletic achievement by female players across the country. On the season, OU's Parker is 17-3 with a 1.66 ERA in 122.0 innings. She's struck out 136 batters against just 33 walks, has thrown eight shutouts and has held opponents to a batting average of .187. The sophomore was named the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Week, the ESPNW National Player of the Week and the Big 12 Pitcher of the Week this past week after earning all four wins for No. 12/9 Oklahoma, including a three-game sweep at then-No. 19/18 Baylor to put the Sooners in first place in the Big 12. It was the first time Baylor had been swept in a three-game series at home since the sport was reintroducedat the school in 1996. Stephens has helped power the Texas offense throughout her senior campaign in the Burnt Orange & White. The Beaumont, Texas, native currently leads UT in every major offensive category: batting average (.407), runs scored (31), hits (48), doubles (15), triples (three), HR's (seven), RBIs (29), total bases (90), slugging percentage (.763), on-base percentage (.478) and stolen bases (11). Her 15 doubles stand just one shy of tying the program single-season record of 16 currently held by former Longhorns standouts Taylor Thom and Nadia Taylor. The Big 12 continues to have three teams (43% of the league) either ranked or receiving votes in the national polls (USA Today/NFCA / ESPN.com/USA Softball): Oklahoma (14/t12), Baylor (19, 18) and Texas (RV/RV). The conference once again raised it's overall winning percentage over the past week, going 7-3 (.700) vs. other conferences. For the year, the league's overall record vs. other leagues sits at 138-76 (.645). Both Baylor and Texas Tech swept their conference series this past weekend to shoot to the top of the league standings. The Bears are a perfect 5-0 through the first two weeks of league play. Baylor's Heather Stearns and Texas' Lindsey Stephens have been named the Big 12 Players of the Week. Stearns threw a complete-game shutout over then No. 4 Louisiana-Lafayette and Stephens hit .500 on the way to the awards. League bats remain strong, with four squads hitting above .300: Oklahoma (.364, No. 4 nationally), Baylor (.318), Oklahoma State (.302) and Texas (.301). Texas Tech (40), Oklahoma (38), Kansas (36) Oklahoma State (35) and Baylor (34) have each eclipsed 30 long balls on the year. Baylor's Sarah Smith leads the league in hitting, posting a .429 (45-for-105) mark this season. TTU's Kierra Miles is currently leads the conference and is tied for 10th in the country in homers with 13. She also leads the league in total bases with 90. BU's Heather Stearns' is at the top of the league in ERA with a 1.32 mark over 111.1 IP. She also has a Big 12-leading 135 strikeouts, 15 wins and five saves (t-2nd in the country).

Baylor's Heather Stearns and Texas' Lindsey Stephens have been named the Big 12 Softball Players of the Week. Stearns threw a complete-game shutout over then No. 4 Louisiana-Lafayette and Stephens hit .500 on the way to the awards. It marks the seventh Pitcher of the Week award for Stearns (third of 2016), who was named All-Big 12 First Team in 2015. Stephens' Player of the Week achievement is the fifth of her career (second of 2016). She was named All-Big 12 First Team in 2015 and earned Third Team All-America honors in 2014. PLAYER OF THE WEEK Lindsey Stephens, Texas, CF, Sr., Beaumont, Texas Stephens led the Texas offense last week by reaching safely in all four contests with a .500 batting average (5-for-10), five runs scored, two doubles, a triple, two home runs and six RBI while slugging 1.500 and posting a 2.143 OPS. She got her week's efforts started by blasting a key two-run HR in the third inning to give UT the lead against Texas State and finalize the score in what would be a 3-2 victory. Stephens then posted a pair of two-hit games in the doubleheader sweep of BYU with each hit going for extra bases while helping the Longhorns to 5-0 and 7-0 wins. Since moving to the lead-off spot in the line-up 17 games ago, Stephens is batting .509 (29-for-57) with 17 runs scored, 14 extra-base hits, including five homers, and 17 RBI. PITCHER OF THE WEEK Heather Stearns, Baylor, RHP, Sr., Plano, Texas Stearns was stellar in a complete-game shutout of No. 4 Louisiana-Lafayette, and also grabbed another two wins and a save to earn Pitcher of the Week honors. In total, the senior from Plano, Texas spun 16.1 innings over the course of the week, allowing just one earned run on nine hits and five walks while striking out 18. Mikkelson and Formby Garnished With Weekly Honors

Oklahoma State's Tiffany Mikkelson and Kansas' Andie Formby have been named the Big 12 Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively. Mikkelson hit at a .545 clip and Formby ran her scoreless streak to 19 innings en route to the awards. It marks Formby's third weekly award of 2016 and her second in a row, while Mikkelson earns her first weekly honor.
