Kansas State and Oklahoma Advance During First Day of Competition

Kansas State and Oklahoma have advanced to the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Tennis Championship after victories in Stillwater on Thursday. The ninth-seeded Wildcats topped No. 8 Iowa State, 4-0, while seventh-seeded Oklahoma defeated No. 10 West Virginia by the score of 4-0.

K-State will face top-seeded Oklahoma State and Oklahoma will meet the second seed, TCU, in the quarters on Friday. No. 4 Kansas will take on No. 5 Baylor, while No. 3 Texas Tech battles No. 6 Texas in the other two women’s quarterfinal matches.

The Wildcats opened their bout with a sweep of the doubles matches, earning the doubles point. Palma Juhasz and Sara Castellano (K-State) defeated Alejandra Galvis and Annabella Bonadonna (ISU), 6-1, while Carolina Costamagna and Livia Cirnu (K-State) topped Regina Espindola and Ana Gasparovic (ISU), 6-0. In singles, K-State took three matches in straight sets to close out the meeting. Sara Castellano beat Liza Buss (7-5, 6-2), Costamagna triumphed over Espindola (6-1, 6-2) and Juhasz picked off Liera Bender (6-1, 6-3).

In the Sooners’ match versus West Virginia, OU swept the double matches to take an early lead. Lily Miyazaki and Emma Devine (OU) defeated Kaja Mrgole and Gabiba Shaker (WVU), 6-3, as Simran Sethi and Christiana Brigante (OU) beat Lyn Yuen Choo and Paula Goetz (WVU), 6-2. On the singles court, Oklahoma continued to roll, taking three points on straight-set wins. Miyazaki topped Hailey Barrett (6-1, 6-1), Brigante shook off Choo (6-1, 6-3) and Malene Stripp took down Mrgole (6-1, 6-2).

Weather permitting, matches tomorrow begin at 9 a.m. CT. The men’s quarterfinals also kick off tomorrow with No. 3 Oklahoma taking on No. 6 Texas and No. 4 Oklahoma State matching up against No. 5 Baylor.
