After a day of riveting tennis, the Big 12 Tennis championship matches have been set. Texas Tech and TCU will face off in the men’s championship, while Oklahoma State will meet Texas Tech in the women’s championship.
En route to the final game of the tournament, the TTU men’s squad took down Baylor, 4-3, while the TCU men topped Oklahoma, 4-2. On the women’s side, top-seeded Oklahoma State dispatched Kansas, 4-0, while Texas Tech put away TCU, 4-1.
In the first semifinal match of the day, the Horned Frogs’ men’s team quelled the Sooners. Cameron Norrie, Alex Rybakov and Trevor Johnson all picked up victories on the singles court for the purple and white. The duos of Guillermo Nunez and Trevor Johnson along with Cameron Norrie and Alex Rybakov took the wins on the doubles court. The Frogs advance to the first Big 12 title match in school history.
The top-seeded Texas Tech men found themselves in a highly contested match with Baylor. After losing the doubles point, Hugo Dojas, Jolan Cailleau, Connor Curry and Bjorn Thomson picked up the triumphs for the Red Raiders giving the squad the victory. The Red Raiders also advance to the championship match for the first time in school history.
On the women’s side, Oklahoma State made quick work of an undermanned Kansas squad. After picking up a point due to forfeit, the Cowgirls won the doubles point, as Viktoriya Lushkova and Kelsey Laurente posted wins on the singles court. It marks the first time since 2014 the Cowgirls made the championship match.
In the final match of the day, the Texas Tech women picked up the doubles point, before Gabriela Talaba, Alex Valenstein and Felicity Maltby put the match away with straight-set victories on the singles court.
