Kansas City, Mo. - No. 1 seed West Virginia recorded a 3-0 victory over No. 8 seed Texas Tech in the first quarterfinal match at the Big 12 Soccer Championship at Swope Soccer Village.
The three goals scored matched the most by any Mountaineer squad in their history at the event. It was also the ninth straight shutout for WVU overall, equalling the conference and school record for consecutive shutouts.
Sophomore Sh'Nia Gordon opened the championship scoring, finding the back of the net at the 14:48 mark of the first half. Junior Michaela Abam and senior Ashley Lawrence had the assists.
The score remained at 1-0 at the break, before the two teams endured a one-hour weather delay to start the second half due to lightning in the area. Once competition resumed, junior forward Heather Kaleiohi drilled a shot into the lower left corner of the net as Abam picked up another assist for a two-goal advantage.
The third WVU score came in the 59th minute as junior midfielder Carla Portillo put back a deflection in front of the net for the final tally.
West Virginia advances to face the winner of the Oklahoma vs. Iowa State contest. That semifinal match will take place on Friday at approximately 5:30 pm ET/4:30 pm CT.
