Lawrence, Kan. - The final day of the 2017 Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championship saw the Texas Longhorns' men and Kansas State Wildcats women as Big 12 Champions.
Texas took its third straight men's outdoor title after earning 153.5 points during competition. UT kept its momentum going from day two and got it done on the field and on the track. Kansas earned second, trailing the longhorns by 10.5 points.
Texas Tech's men came in third with 110 points and Oklahoma marked 96 points while finishing fourth. Baylor (79 points), Oklahoma State (75 points), Iowa State (56 points), TCU (53 points) and K-State (52.5 points) finished fifth through 10th, respectively.
The K-State women were crowned champion for the first time since 2002 by claiming 133 points through out the three days. The Wildcats earned field victories high jump, discus, hammer throw and on the track in the 3,000 meter steeple chase to propel the team to vicotry. K-State was closely followed by Texas (128.5) with the point battle coming down to the last two races of the night.
Baylor finished third with 123 points after making a comeback in the final few events of the day. Oklahoma scored 121 points to come in fourth and Kansas landed in fifth with 84 overall points. Texas Tech (64 points), Iowa State (55 points), Oklahoma State (48 points), TCU (36 points) and West Virginia (26.5 points) rounded out the field.
Baylor's Maxwell Willis earned the men's high-point award after racking 20.5 points for the team score. Willis becomes just the third Baylor men's athlete to earn high-point scorer honors at the meet, joining Brandon Couts (1998) and Reggie Witherspoon (2007).
The women's high point award went to K-State's Nina Schultz, totaling 25 points after competing in the javelin throw, high jump, long jump, 100-meter hurdles and the 4x400-meter relay. Schultz is the fourth wildcat to claim the honor.
Also on the final day, K-State's Shadea Lawrence set a new Big 12 meet record in the women's discus with a toss of 62.59m, besting the previous mark by over two meters (60.18m by Jessica Maroszek of Kansas in 2014).
Kansas took home two new Big 12 meet records as Mitchell Cooper set a new men's discus record with a 63.98m throw as Hassain Alhizam cleared in pole vault with a 5.56m mark.
NCAA Preliminary Round competition takes place May 25-27 in either Austin, Texas (West Preliminary) or Lexington, Ky. (East Preliminary). The individual event student-athletes and relay teams accepted into Preliminary Round competition will be announced and posted on NCAA.com the week prior.
