OSU Men, ISU Women Crowned Cross Country Champions

Lubbock, Texas - The Oklahoma State men and Iowa State women took home team titles at the 2016 Big 12 Cross Country Championship. Both squads continued their success over the conference cross country scene as the Cowboys secured their ninth-straight Big 12 title, while the Cyclone women won their fifth crown in the last six years.

The Oklahoma State men totaled 35 team points, with Iowa State coming in second with 49 points. The runner-up finish for the Cyclones was their best finish since 2013. Iowa State was followed by Texas, which took third with 100 points. Kansas (104) and Texas Tech (123) rounded out the top five.

Individually, TTU’s Benard Keter and Miguel Bautista took home first and second place, respectively, marking the first time the Red Raiders claimed the top two spots in the conference meet in Big 12 history. Kenter completed the 8,000-meter course in a time of 25:28.7. OSU’s Hassan Abdi (third) and Luis Martinez (fifth) along with ISU’s Thomas Pollard (fourth) round out the top five. The Cowboys had five runners in the top-15 en route to their team championship.

On the women’s side, Iowa State totaled 56 points to take first place. The Cyclones reclaim the team championship after breaking their four-year streak last season. Oklahoma State took second place with 82 points. The Cyclones and Cowgirls were joined by West Virginia (111), Oklahoma (124) and Baylor (126) in the top five.

Kansas’ Sharon Lokedi raced a 20:18 in her 6K to take home the Jayhawks’ first indivdiual championship in conference history. Coming up behind Lokedi was WVU’s Jillian Forsey who finished .13 seconds behind the lead to record the highest individual finish for the Mountaineers since joining the league. Brenely Goetzen (TCU), Anne Frisbie (ISU) and Lindsey Bradley (BU) finished out the top five spots.

Next up for the Big 12 cross country teams will be NCAA regional competition, which kicks off on November 11.
