Women’s First-Round Matches Open at 2010 Big 12 Tennis Championships

AUSTIN, Texas - The Big 12 Tennis Championships opened with women’s first-round action at Penick-Allison Tennis Center, with four teams advancing to Friday’s quarterfinals.

In the morning match, fifth-seeded Oklahoma shutout No. 12 Kansas, 4-0. The Sooners took the doubles point, with Tara Eckel and Maria Kalashnikova posting an 8-4 win at No. 2 and Kristina Radan and Marie-Pier Huet winning (8-2) at No. 3.

Huet topped KU’s Sara Kalashnikova with a 6-1, 6-1 win in the No. 2 spot. OU’s Teona Tsertsvadze also swept straight sets (6-4, 6-0) from Maria Martinez at No. 3 singles. At the No. 6 spot, Eckel defeated Victoria Khanevskaya (6-0, 6-3) for the Sooner victory. OU will face No. 4 Texas A&M at Noon CT in Friday’s matchup.

Eighth-seeded Kansas State also faced No. 9 Colorado in the morning matches, as the Buffs upset the Wildcats, 4-1. CU grabbed the doubles point with No. 3 Ania Anuszkiewicz/Erin Sanders and No. 2 Abbie Probert/Michala Jensen posting a pair of 8-6 wins.

Colorado’s Monica Milewski bested K-State’s Antea Huljev in straight sets of 6-0, 6-4 at No. 1 singles. Probert followed with a 6-2, 6-4 victory at the third spot. Sanders sealed CU’s trip to the quarterfinals, winning (6-3, 4-6, 6-3) at No. 6 singles. Colorado meets top-seeded Baylor at 9 a.m. CT.

No. 6 Texas Tech and No. 11 Missouri matched up in the afternoon. The Red Raiders took a 4-1 victory over the Tigers. TTU’s No. 2 doubles duo Sandra Dynka/Elizabeth Ullathorne and No. 3 Stefanie Peana/Caroline Starck rallied for a pair of 8-5 wins against Mizzou, after Texas Tech lost the first doubles match.

Red Raider Kelsey Garland started things off, winning in straight sets (6-4, 6-0) over MU’s Maria Christensen in No. 3 singles. Starck then earned the win (6-4, 6-1) at No. 5. TTU tallied another point from Ullathorne at No. 4 singles (6-2, 6-3). Texas Tech advances to play third-seeded Nebraska at 6 p.m. CT.

No. 7 Oklahoma State and No. 10 Iowa State closed out the first day, as OSU prevailed with a 4-1 victory to face No. 2 Texas at 3 p.m. CT in the quarterfinals.

Oklahoma State took the early lead by winning the doubles point with Sasha Belova/Sarah Meghoufel at No. 2 (8-5) and Malika Rose/Leyla Simmons at No. 3 (8-3).  Belova scored a singles win (6-2, 6-2) for the Cowgirls at No. 2. Meghoufel added another win (7-5, 6-1) in No. 4 singles. Rose clinched OSU’s victory with a straight-set sweep (6-1, 6-4) at No. 5 singles.
