Austin, Texas - Reigning national and conference champion Baylor
claimed its fourth straight Big 12 Men's Tennis Championships crown on
Sunday at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center on the University of Texas
campus.
The Bears also extended their school record win streak to 52 with a 4-1
victory over third-seeded Oklahoma State. Baylor (28-0) defeated OSU
(21-6) in the title match for the second time in three years -- in 2003
BU won 4-0.
Tomas Bohunicky/Artsem Burmistrau (Oklahoma State) won the first doubles
match for the Cowboys 8-3 at No. 3. But, Baylor captured the subsequent
matches at No. 1 (Benedikt Dorsch/Matija Zgaga) and No. 2 (Lars
Poerschke/Michal Kokta) for the doubles point.
In singles action, Kokta recorded the Bears' second point at No. 4 (6-1,
6-2), while Dorsch followed with a straight set victory (6-2, 6-1) over
Mark Van Elden (Oklahoma State) on the No. 1 court. Bohunicky added
another victory on the day to stop a BU sweep defeating Poerschke 6-3,
6-4. Benjamin Becker (Baylor) clinched the match and championship in
three sets at No. 2 for the Bears, tallying the fourth and final point.
Dorsch was named the championships' Most Outstanding Performer for his
performance during the three-day event.
Baylor begins its quest to defend its NCAA championship on May 13-14 or
14-15 in the first and second rounds at to be determined campus sites.
The Bears earned the conference's automatic bid to the 2005 NCAA
Division I Men's Tennis Championships with the championships victory.
