September 15, 2008

Robert Griffin (Baylor), Daniel Charbonnet (Texas Tech) and Jeff Wolfert (Missouri) have been named Big 12 Conference Football Players of the Week as selected by a media panel. Griffin (offense) and Charbonnet (defense) earned their first weekly award while Wolfert (special teams) was recognized for the second time in his career.

Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week
Robert Griffin, Baylor, QB, Fr, Copperas Cove, Texas
True freshman Robert Griffin established a Baylor single-game rushing record with 217 yards on 11 carries and two touchdowns against Washington State in his second career start and third career game. It marked the Bears’ first 200-yard rushing performance since the previous record was set in 1994. Griffin also set school and Big 12 Conference records with 19.7 yards per rush, was 7-of-15 passing for 129 yards and one touchdown with no interceptions. He tallied 217 all-purpose yards to tie for the ninth-best single-game total in school history and generated 346 yards of total offense, 12th all-time at Baylor. Griffin led the Bears to their first win against a non-Big 12 BCS team since 1998, ending a six-game skid.

Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week
Daniel Charbonnet, Texas Tech, SS, Sr, The Woodlands, Texas
Daniel Charbonnet set a Texas Tech single-game record with three interceptions against SMU. The Red Raiders had five total interceptions on the night. His pick on the first play of the game marked the second-straight home outing Tech has recorded an interception on the game’s opening play. He also added two tackles in the win. Charbonnet leads the country with four interceptions this season.

Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week
Jeff Wolfert, Missouri, PK, Sr, Overland Park, Kan.
Jeff Wolfert connected on a Missouri single-game record 9-of-9 PATs, while hitting both of his field goal tries to tally 15 points in the win over Nevada. Wolfert has now made 91 consecutive combined kicks dating back to a third quarter missed field goal against Illinois State in the fourth game of 2007. Wolfert has career marks of 136-of-136 on PATs and 43-of-49 on FGs (87.8%). He is MU’s career scoring leader for kickers with 264 points and needs 21 more points to break Brad Smith’s all-position career scoring record of 284 points (2002-05).
