Highlighted by three national television windows each week on ESPN or ESPN2, the Big 12 Conference has announced its men’s basketball conference schedule for the 2009-10 season.
Currently, a total of 79 conference games will be televised nationally or regionally on an ESPN network, ABC, CBS or the regionally-syndicated Big 12 Network. The games are being broadcast as part of the second season of a new multi-year agreement with ESPN that runs through the 2015-16 season. Among the league contests not televised on a national or regional basis, many of those will be selected at a later date for local telecast packages and inclusion on ESPN Full Court - the pay subscription college basketball outer-market service.
The Big 12 slate tips off on Saturday, January 9, with five league contests along with one non-conference game broadcast nationally and regionally. The Big 12 resumes its spot in ESPN’s traditional “Big Monday” lineup two days later when Oklahoma State travels to Oklahoma. Over the course of the 2009-10 campaign, every school in the conference will be showcased on ESPN, ESPN2 or ABC.
In men’s basketball, the Big 12 was the first conference to be guaranteed three weekly telecast windows on ESPN or ESPN2, which reach 96 and 95 million homes, respectively. In addition, 95 games overall (conference and non-conference) will air annually with more than 60 contests broadcast by ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ABC, ESPN360.com or another national over-the-air network.
In March, the Phillips 66 Big 12 Men’s Basketball Championship will continue to be televised on a variety of ESPN platforms including ESPN, ESPN2 and in regional syndication on the Big 12 Network.
The re-branded Big 12 Network is in its second year and can be seen throughout the conference’s geographic footprint. It has also been available on stations in numerous other markets, including New York, Chicago, Baltimore and Providence. Among all the televised games, many will be shown as part of ESPN Full Court.
The Big 12 will boast seven of 10 members from the All-Big 12 First and Second Teams back in 2009-10. Nine of the league’s top 13 scorers return, with nine of 12 squads overall having at least 50 percent of their scoring back from a year ago. Several top newcomers and transfers will also join the conference, including 21 of the top 90 players from the ESPNU/Scouts Inc. recruiting rankings.
The Big 12 has had the nation’s best winning percentage in NCAA competition over the last two years and during the past seven seasons (since 2003).
