Ann Gleason (Iowa State), Shay Powell (Nebraska) and Emily Anderson (Texas) were named to the 2009 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Anderson, a first-team honoree, became the first Longhorn in the program’s history to earn Academic All-America accolades twice in her career. The Austin, Texas senior defender holds a 4.00 GPA in the Accounting/MPA program. Over her career, Anderson posted 11 goals and four assists for 26 points.
Senior goalkeeper Gleason and senior forward Powell received second team recognition.
Gleason became the inaugural ISU soccer player to receive Academic All-America honors. The Stillwater, Minn.-native has compiled a 3.97 GPA in Chemical Engineering. Gleason ranked second in the league in saves (85) while ranking first on the Cyclones all-time lists in career wins (26), shutouts (16) and saves (403).
Powell, a three-time first team Academic All-Big 12 honoree, has a 3.92 GPA in Psychology. She is the third Husker all-time to be named a CoSIDA Academic All-American. The Dallas, Texas native helped Nebraska rank third nationally in scoring offense (3.10).
To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Since the program’s inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
