Release: 11/23/2009
by Big12Sports.com

Destinee Hooker (Texas) and Kayla Banwarth (Nebraska) have been named Big 12 Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week for the matches of Nov. 16-22.  Paola Ampudia (Missouri) is recognized as the league's Rookie of the Week.  It marks the 12th weekly accolade of Hooker's career, while Ampudia and Banwarth are honored for the fourth and second time, respectively.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Destinee Hooker, Texas, OH, Sr., 6-4, San Antonio, Texas/Southwest
Hooker averaged a Big 12-leading 7.00 points, 4.83 kills while hitting at a .338 clip in a pair of sweeps against No. 24 Baylor and Kansas State.  Defensively, Hooker produced 2.50 digs and 1.83 blocks per set. She also paced the league with 0.83 service aces per set and helped UT clinch at least a share of its third consecutive Big 12 title.  Against KSU, Hooker connected on 15 of 30 error-free swings to post a .500 attack percentage. Hooker tied a career-high with four block assists and eight total blocks in the victory. She contributed three service aces and seven digs to the Longhorn effort.  At Baylor, Hooker recorded 14 kills and eight digs along with three total blocks, two service aces and two assists.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Kayla Banwarth, Nebraska, L, Jr., 5-11, Dubuque, Iowa/Wahlert Catholic
Banwarth tallied 7.17 digs and 0.67 assists per set while helping Nebraska defeat Baylor and Kansas. She also keyed a Husker defense that did not allow a service ace in two matches. The Dubuque, Iowa native set school and building records with a career-high 32 digs against Baylor on Wednesday. That performance tied her career high and also surpassed the program mark for a three-set match that had been in the record book since 1985 and was the most by any player in the NU Coliseum since 1987. It also helped limit Baylor to a season-low .089 hitting. At Kansas on Saturday, Banwarth finished with a match-high 11 digs and assisted in holding Kansas to .085 hitting.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Paola Ampudia, Missouri, OH/RS, Jr., 6-1, Cali, Colombia/Miami Dade College
Ampudia averaged a Conference-best 5.33 kills, 3.00 digs and 1.17 blocks while accounting for a team-best 35.5 total points last week. The Miami Dade-transfer missed a kill-dig double-double against No. 8 Iowa State by just one dig, and posted a team-best 15 kills and three block assists. At Texas Tech, Ampudia registered a match-high 17 kills and was also just one dig shy of another double-double.
