Damion James (Texas) and Ekpe Udoh (Baylor) have been named the Phillips 66 Big 12 Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, for games of November 23-29 in voting by a panel of media covering the conference. It is the second career player honor for James (Dec. 3, 2007) and the first rookie recognition for Udoh.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Damion James, Texas, G/F, Sr., 6-7, 225, Nacogdoches, Texas/Nacogdoches
James led the Longhorns to three victories last week, averaging 12.7 points and 9.7 rebounds. The senior started with a double-double (10 points, 12 rebounds) in an 85-60 win over Iowa. He then recorded a game-high 20 points, with nine rebounds and one block in 33 minutes in a victory over Pittsburgh (78-62). His efforts in those two games earned him MVP honors of the O’Reilly Auto Parts CBE Classic. He added eight points and eight rebounds in a 77-59 road win at Rice on Saturday. During the course of the week, James became the third player in UT history and sixth in Big 12 history to reach the 1,000-rebound plateau. He shot 46.7 percent in his three outings, while adding one assist, four blocks and three steals.
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Ekpe Udoh, Baylor, F, Jr., 6-10, 240, Edmond, Okla./Santa Fe/University of Michigan
Udoh averaged 15.0 points, 10.0 rebounds, 4.3 blocks and 3.3 assists as the Bears went 2-1 at the Old Spice Classic in Orlando. The junior forward posted three consecutive double-doubles last week, including two in the first two games of the Old Spice Classic. He had 17 points and 10 boards in BU’s 79-76 loss to Alabama. He followed that with 13 points, 11 rebounds and five rejections in the Bears’ 76-62 overtime tally over Iona. Udoh concluded the event with 15 points, nine boards and six blocks in a 69-64 victory over Xavier. For the week, he shot 58.8 percent, including 50.0 percent from 3-point range to go along with 11 assists and 13 blocked shots. He has recorded multiple blocks in 11 consecutive games and has scored in double-digits in seven straight contests.
