The Big 12 Conference has announced its postseason honorees for the 2009-10 women’s golf season. Ten student-athletes received All-Big 12 status, while Oklahoma State sophomore Caroline Hedwall took Player of the Year honors for the second straight season and Texas A&M’s Julia Boland earned the Newcomer of the Year award. A&M’s Trelle McCombs won Big 12 Coach of the Year in a vote by the league’s head coaches.
The 2010 All-Big 12 Team was identified by using the Top 10 highest-ranked student-athletes according to the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings following the Big 12 Championship. The Player and Newcomer of the Year are automatically selected as the highest ranked individuals from the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings following the Conference championship.
Hedwall claimed medalist honors and set a Big 12 Championship record with a three-round score of six-under par 210. She has four victories to her credit this season, also winning the Golfweek Conference Challenge, the Lady Puerto Rico Classic and the Arizona Wildcat Invitational. Overall, she has finished in the top five in seven of her 10 starts this season.
Boland, a graduate student at A&M, won three tournaments for the Aggies this season, including the UCF Challenge. She also competed as an amateur in the Australian Open. Her stroke average of 71.95 and Golfweek/Sagarin ranking of 27th in the country lead the team.
In her third season at the helm of the A&M women’s golf program, McCombs’ team earned a Conference title by making up 11 shots in the final round to nudge OSU by one stroke. The team score of 896 set a Big 12 Championship record. The conference championship was the fourth victory for the Aggies this season as they also won the Mo Morial in College Station, the Challenge at Onion Creek and the UCF Challenge.
