Kerra Schroeder (Colorado) and Caitlyn Vann (Missouri) have been chosen as the Big 12 Volleyball Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week for the matches of Oct. 11-17, the Conference office announced. For the second straight week, Sallie McLaurin has received Rookie of the Week honors. Vann is being recognized for the fifth time in her career while Schroeder earns her first weekly accolade.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Kerra Schroeder, Colorado, OH, So., 6-0, San Diego, Calif./Torrey Pines
Schroeder recorded a career-high 35 kills in a come-from-behind five-set victory at Texas Tech. Thirteen of Schroeder's kills came in the final set with CU edging the Red Raiders 28-26 for the match. Schroeder accounted for 36 of CU's points overall. The San Diego, Calif. outside hitter hit .324 and added 13 digs to compile her fifth double-double of the season. Schroeder also received 31 serves, the most of any Buff in the match, with zero errors. Her 35 kills tied for the second-best total by a Big 12 player in 2010 while ranking third in CU's five-set match records. It marked just the second time the feat had been done by a Buff in the rally-scoring era.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Caitlyn Vann, Missouri. L, Sr., 5-6, Muncie, Ind. / Burris
Vann led the Big 12 with 6.33 digs per set in the Tigers' wins over Texas A&M and Baylor. She tallied 31 digs against the Bears, Mizzou's best output in three years and just three shy of her career best (34 vs. St. Johns, 2007). Vann helped MU post a season-high 81 digs which was 15 more than Baylor, the nation's leader in digs per set. The Muncie, Ind.-senior was also perfect on 18 service receptions in the match. Earlier in the week, Vann registered a then-season-high 26 digs in a five-set victory at A&M. Vann dished out eight assists on the week, including six versus Baylor to match her best effort in 2010. She moved into second place in the Big 12 digs rankings after this week's performance.
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Sallie McLaurin, Oklahoma, MB, Fr., 6-2, Midwest City, Okla./Carl Albert HS
McLaurin paced the Big 12 with 1.71 blocks (nine block assists, three block solos) after OU went 1-1 last week. She also averaged 2.71 kills on .471 hitting while scoring 27.5 points, both ranked second on the Sooner squad. Against No. 11 Texas, she had nine kills and a .300 attack clip in the four-set loss. McLaurin chipped in a match-high seven total blocks, defensively. In the sweep of Kansas, McLaurin connected on 10 kills in 14 swings with no errors to compile a .714 hitting percentage. The Midwest City, Okla.-middle blocker also contributed a match-best 13.5 points and five total blocks, including two block solos.
