Tyler Naquin (Texas A&M) and Taylor Jungmann (Texas) highlight the 2011 edition of the Phillips 66 All-Big 12 Baseball Awards. Naquin has earned Player of the Year honors, while Jungmann was the unanimous choice for Pitcher of the Year. Erich Weiss (Texas) and Zach Johnson (Oklahoma State) garner Freshman and Newcomer of the Year honors, respectively. Augie Garrido (Texas) and Rob Childress (Texas A&M) share Coach of the Year accolades.
The official All-Big 12 awards are selected by the league's head coaches, who are not allowed to vote for their own players.
This marks the third overall Player of the Year honor for the Aggies (Jose Duran, 2008 and Jason Tyner, 1998) while this is the sixth Pitcher of the Year recognition for the Longhorns (2010, 2007, 2006, 2004, 2002). Naquin and Jungmann are also unanimous All-Big 12 First Team selections.
Naquin leads the Big 12 in overall batting average on the season (.392) and paces the Conference with a .404 clip in league play. The sophomore's 85 hits are best in the league while his 54 runs scored are also tops in the Big 12. The sophomore, who batted just .244 in his rookie campaign last season, compiled the league's longest hitting streak of 2011, piecing together a 27-game hit streak from March 30-May 14. Naquin's incredible streak left him second in the Texas A&M record books for the longest ever, just one behind R.J. Englert, who set the school record by hitting in 28 consecutive games in 1972. The Spring, Texas, native also held a streak of reaching base in 39-straight games. In Big 12 action, he also led the circuit in hits (42), runs scored (26) and was second with a .488 on-base percentage.
Jungmann is a perfect 12-0 on the season, leading the league in overall wins, ERA (0.95), strikeouts (109), opponent batting average (.167) and innings pitched (113.2). The junior has three shutouts and four complete games. His 14-straight victories dating back to the 2010 postseason mark the second-longest active win streak in the nation. The Longhorns are in the race to record the nation's best ERA for the second-straight season while Jungmann has paced the NCAA in wins this season. He is a three-time 2011 Phillips 66 Big 12 Pitcher of the Week and is also a quarterfinalist for the 2011 Pitcher of the Year award. In the last six starts of the regular season, Jungmann allowed just four earned runs over 49 innings
In his first season in the Big 12 Conference, Johnson ranks third in the league with a .354 batting average after starting all 54 regular season games for the Cowboys. The transfer from Ohlone JC ranks second in home runs (11), second in RBI (56), third in runs scored (48), third in doubles (20), third in triples (six) and fifth in hits (72). Johnson is part of 18 newcomers on the Cowboys' roster this season. He joins Tyler Mach (2006) as OSU's only other Newcomer of the Year recipient.
Weiss finished the 2011 regular season campaign with the second-best batting average in the league at .370. In his rookie year, he posted the highest on-base percentage in the Conference with a .509 mark. The Brenham, Texas, native earned Newcomer of the Week honors on two occasions. He was a unanimous selection to the league's inaugural All-Freshman Team.
Garrido and Childress both guided their respective squads to 19-8 league records to share the Big 12's regular-season title. Garrido claims his sixth overall Coach of the Year accolade (2010, '07, '06, '04, '02) while Childress was awarded his second (2008). This marks just the second time Co-Coaches of the year have been honored (2007).
