Big 12 Announces Plans for Future Championship Sites
November 23, 2011
The Big 12 Conference announces plans for future host sites for its soccer, women's basketball, indoor track & field, tennis and outdoor track & field championships. The sites were approved by the Big 12's athletics directors and require final Board of Directors' approval.

Following the 2011-12 season the men's and women's basketball championships will become stand alone events, taking place in separate cities. The men's championship is under contract, and will continue in Kansas City through 2014. Starting in 2013 the women's championship will be held in Dallas at the American Airlines Center, with Oklahoma City playing host in 2014 at the Chesapeake Energy Center. With the change, the women's basketball championship will take place the Friday-Monday preceding the men's championship, which will continue its Wednesday-Saturday format.

"Our woman's basketball coaches and student-athletes will have the opportunity to showcase the sport's premiere Conference championship in state-of-the-art arenas that our home to NBA teams," said interim commissioner Chuck Neinas. "I would like to thank the Kansas City Sports Commission for accommodating our desire to separate the men's and women's basketball championships. Kansas City continues to be a valuable partner of the Big 12."

The 2013 Phillips 66 Big 12 Women's Basketball Championship returns to Dallas for the first time since 2006. In 2003, 2004 and 2006 the Championship took place at Reunion Arena. The American Airlines Center and Big 12 Conference hosted the 2011 NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Regional, which was second in overall attendance for both sessions with 21,030 spectators, including 11,508 at the final between Baylor and Texas A&M. The AAC is home to the 2011 NBA champion Dallas Mavericks.

Oklahoma City will host the women's basketball championship for the first time in Chesapeake Energy Arena after the 2007 and 2009 Championships were played in Cox Convention Center. The Big 12 and Oklahoma City served as hosts of the 2008 and 2009 NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Regionals in what is now Chesapeake Energy Arena. Both years the Oklahoma City Regional registered the best attendance among the four regional sites for both single session and combined attendance. The facility serves as home to the NBA's Oklahoma City Thunder.

For 2013 and 2014 the Big 12 Soccer Championships move to Kansas City, Kan., for the first time to play in the new LIVESTRONG Sporting Park - home of major league soccer's Sporting Kansas City. The $200-million stadium just opened in 2011.

The 2013, 2014 and 2015 Big 12 Indoor Track & Field Championships will be hosted by Iowa State University. The 2014 Big 12 Tennis Championships have been awarded to new Conference member TCU while Texas will host in 2015. The Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Championships were awarded to Baylor in 2013, Texas Tech in 2014, Iowa State in 2015 and TCU in 2016.

Iowa State has hosted Big 12 Indoor Track & Field Championships on four previous occasions (1998, 2000, 2007 and 2010). The Cyclones will host the outdoor championships for the first time in 2015.

TCU will become a member of the Big 12 on July 1, 2012, and host the league's tennis championships in 2014 and outdoor track & field championships in 2016. The 2015 tennis championships will be played at Texas for the fourth time (1997, 2005, 2010).

Baylor will host the 2013 Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Championships for the fourth year (1997, 1999, 2006) while Texas Tech will serve as host of the 2014 championship for the second time (2009).
