OU's Brooks Earns Spot on The Bowerman Women's Watch List

Oklahoma junior Tia Brooks has been named to the latest update of The Bowerman women's watch list, as announced by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. The Bowerman, which debuted in 2009, is presented annually to the most outstanding male and female collegiate track and field athletes in the nation.

Brooks threw a collegiate-leading put of 60-8 (18.49m) Jan. 21 at Oklahoma's J.D. Martin Duals, setting an OU record. The junior's throw is the third-best mark in the world and meets the Olympic A standard. The mark makes her the fifth-best indoor performer in the event all-time in the NCAA.

The native of Grand Rapids, Mich., is a three-time All-American and the defending Big 12 indoor shot put champion. She was runner-up in the indoor and outdoor shot put at the 2011 NCAA Championships and has earned four all-conference honors. Brooks holds the indoor and outdoor shot put program records at Oklahoma.

It is the first time Brooks has landed on the watch list. The Sooner is the only league female on the watch list, as Kansas State's Ryann Krais is placed on the "also receiving mention" list.

Marquise Goodwin (Texas) makes the men's watch list, while German Fernandez (Oklahoma State), Mason Finley (Kansas) and Maston Wallace (Texas) also earned mention.

In the award's three-year existence, the Big 12 has claimed two winners and four semifinalists for the men and women. Texas A&M's Jessica Beard is the most recent honoree, claiming the prestigious award in 2011.
