With both Big 12 conference tennis seasons underway, a men's and women's Big 12 Tennis Player of the Week was selected by league officials for matches from March 26-April 1. Oklahoma's Costin Paval was honored on the men's side after two victories over ranked opponents, while Texas A&M's Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar garnered the women's award. She produced a perfect week in singles and doubles play.
This is the first career award for both Paval and Sanchez-Quintanar.
Big 12 Men's Tennis Player of the Week
Costin Paval, Oklahoma, Junior, Bucharest, Romania/Mincea Eliade
Paval helped the Sooners to back-to-back wins to open conference play as he recorded victories at the No. 1 singles position against No. 13 Texas and No. 25 Texas A&M. He is currently riding a six-match win streak and is ranked No. 13 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Associaton's rankings.
On Friday, the junior clinched a 5-2 Sooner victory over the Longhorns with a 6-4, 6-2 win over No. 64 Soren Hess-Olsen. On Sunday, in singles against Texas A&M, Paval continued his impressive play with a 6-4,6-0 win versus 29th-ranked Alexis Klegou.
In doubles action, Paval partnered with Dane Webb for an 8-5 win against Texas' 27th-ranked Chris Camillone and David Holiner. On Sunday, the duo tallied a 9-8 victory over No. 30 Junior Ore and Jackson Withrow of Texas A&M.
On the year, Paval has recorded a 10-2 singles record. He and Dane have accumulated an 11-3 record in doubles and are ranked No. 13.
Big 12 Women's Tennis Player of the Week
Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar, Texas A&M, Jr., Campo de Criptana, Spain
Sanchez-Quintanar went a combined 4-0 in singles and doubles this week to help Texas A&M (13-1, 4-0 Big 12) go 2-0 and extend its record-setting winning streak to 13.
She improved to a perfect 14-0 in singles dual matches -- including 10-0 at the No. 1 line and 4-0 in Big 12 matches - and 10-4 in doubles, all at the No. 1 spot in the lineup.
Sanchez-Quintanar clinched the winning point in the Aggies' 6-1 victory against Kansas State as she defeated 32nd-ranked and defending Big 12 No. 1 singles champion Petra Niedermayerova in straight sets, 7-6 (2), 6-1. It marked Sanchez-Quintanar's fourth victory of the spring against a ranked opponent.
Sanchez-Quintanar was first off in singles against Kansas, quickly defeating Monica Pezzotti at the No. 1 line, 6-0, 6-2, to give A&M a 2-0 lead against the Jayhawks. It was Sanchez-Quintanar's 14th consecutive victory, with 13 of them coming in straight sets.
Sanchez-Quintanar and partner Wen Sun never trailed in their two doubles matches and contributed to A&M capturing the doubles point against both Kansas State and Kansas. The Aggie duo defeated K-State's Karla Bonacic and Niedermayerova, 8-4, at the No. 1 line as A&M went on to win two of the three doubles contests.
Against Kansas, Sanchez-Quintanar and Sun clinched the doubles point with an 8-3 victory over Pezzotti and Dylan Windom.
