Jim Rome, who recently moved from ESPN to
CBSSports.com, proved he's big enough to admit he was wrong. Last fall, when
the Big 12 Conference was faced with losing Texas A&M, Rome criticized
Baylor for threatening legal action. Here's part of his rant from last
September:
"Scrubby
little Baylor. Even they have to know they're Baylor. ... Baylor, you do know
you're Baylor, right? And that nobody gives a damn about you. ... Why would I be
talking about Baylor? It's scrubby little Baylor that's holding up this potential
seismic shift in college football....Shut your pie hole and go to the WAC. Again,
my point about is Baylor is ... they're Baylor."
But after Baylor's recent run of success - Heisman
Trophy winner, bowl victory, Elite Eight in men's basketball, national championship
in women's basketball - Rome, to his credit, ate some humble pie. This is what
he said last week:
"And I can't
believe I'm about to say this but...the center of the sports world is Central
Texas. Yeah I said it. And I said it because Baylor U is killing it. Look,
there was a time when you thought of Baylor, you thought Big 12 tomato can. A
warm up game for Texas or OU. I remember that time because it was about six
months ago.
"And yes, I
was the guy who had to remind Baylor that they were Baylor when they were
whining about conference realignment. And that if they didn't like it, they
could just go to the WAC where they belonged. Well, not only do they belong in
the Big 12, they're running the Big 12. An undefeated run to the National
Championship for the ladies, a Heisman Trophy for RG III and an Elite 8 run for
the men's team. Big tip of the hat to the Baylor nation: and now when I think
of Waco, and I think of the Baylor Bears and not the Branch Davidians"
