Your Humble Correspondent has been around long
enough - some would say, too long - that there should be nothing that moves the
needle the surprise meter. It makes perfect sense that with more coverage and
more attention to a particular subject, there will also be more criticism.
But YHC is flabbergasted and, yes, surprised to
read that the NFL Draft process has produced a couple of negative comments
about Robert Griffin III.
Baylor's Heisman Trophy winner isn't perfect. And
it can be said that YHC is prejudiced in favor of RG3. But comments surfaced
this week that make YHC question the judgment of some folks who are employed to
be NFL scouts.
The Milwaukee
Journal-Sentinel annually polls over a dozen scouts and gathers their
anonymous opinions on the upcoming NFL Draft. One scout said of RG3: "I
don't think he has vision or pocket feel ... He's just running around winging it."
Another scout believes that Griffin is selfish and said, "He doesn't treat
anybody good."
You can theorize why the negative comments are
coming out with the draft a week away. Mike Freeman of CBSSports.com believes
the criticism of Cam Newton last season and Griffin this year might be based on
the color of their skin.
As we know, everyone is entitled to their opinion and everyone has an
opinion just like they have a certain body part. YHC has no clue what the NFL
seeks in a quarterback. Apparently, though, film study, the NFL Combine,
on-campus pro days, private workouts, Wunderlich testing are just some of the
tangibles that NFL teams use to try to make an exact science out of predicting
future success.
All YHC knows is what he sees. Griffin's talent, leadership and personality helped
transform a school known as a laughable loser into a winner. RG3 has size,
speed, intelligence and an arm that can throw tight spirals 60 yards to a
streaking receiver or a fast ball 15 yards into a tight space. If Cam Newton
can be a successful NFL quarterback, YHC believes RG3 can be a successful NFL
quarterback.
Will Griffin play in the NFL for 15 years, perhaps win a couple of Super
Bowl titles? YHC thinks the answer could be "yes" but if YHC could predict the
future he would have bought stock in Apple 30 years ago.
Perhaps these comments from two NFL scouts are
examples of two folks tired of hearing all the hosannas thrown at RG3. Perhaps
in five years, if Griffin is a bust, the one scout can say, "Remember the guy
who said Griffin just runs around and wings it? That was me."
But the scout who said Robert Griffin III "doesn't
treat anybody good?" YHC doesn't need to know a football player from a
ballerina to say, "Wrong." YHC isn't sure which team that scout works for, it's
likely a that team isn't head to the Super Bowl in the near future.
