Big 12 Announces Men's Basketball Schedule
Entering the season with the nation's best winning percentage in NCAA Tournament play over the last five years, the Big 12 will look to continue and expand on that success as it releases the schedule for the 2012-13 campaign. The Conference is the only one among the six major conferences to boast a full double round-robin format.
Currently, a total of 84 conference games (93.3 percent) will be televised nationally or regionally on an ESPN network, CBS or the regionally-syndicated Big 12 Network. The contests are being carried as part of the fifth season of a multi-year agreement with ESPN that runs through the 2015-16 season. Of the league games not televised on a national or regional basis, many of those will be selected at a later date for local telecast packages and inclusion on ESPN Full Court and WatchESPN.
This year's Big 12 slate welcomes two new members - TCU and West Virginia. Eight of the 10 league squads will tip off the conference schedule on Saturday, January 5. The Big 12 will also continue its spot in ESPN's traditional "Big Monday" lineup on January 14 when Baylor travels to Kansas. A total of eight different schools will be showcased on Big Monday with every team in the conference gaining exposure numerous times on ESPN or ESPN2.
At least 100 games overall (conference and non-conference) will air annually. In men's basketball, the Big 12 was the first conference to be guaranteed three weekly telecast windows on ESPN or ESPN2, which each reach approximately 100 million homes, respectively.
The Phillips 66 Big 12 Men's Basketball Championship on March 13-16 will continue to be televised on a variety of ESPN platforms including ESPN, ESPN2 and in regional syndication on the Big 12 Network. The Championship will begin for the second straight year with two first-round games on Wednesday evening, followed by the quarterfinals, semifinals and title contest in successive days.
The Big 12 Network is in its fifth year, with games seen throughout the conference's geographic footprint and produced by ESPN Regional Television. It has been or will be distributed in numerous other markets, including New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Phoenix, San Diego, Milwaukee, Baltimore and Providence. Among all the televised games, most will be shown as part of ESPN Full Court and available on WatchESPN.
The Big 12 has had six or more teams earn NCAA berths in four of the last five campaigns. Eight of the 10 squads have been ranked in the top 25 during the last three seasons, with every school having been ranked at least once since 1999. Since 2008, every head coach in the Big 12 has led a team to the NCAA Tournament, with half of the current coaches having guided a squad to the Final Four during their careers.
The Big 12 has been rated among the top three conferences in the final RPI each of the past five seasons - no other conference can make that claim. In addition, the 19 teams that have advanced to the Elite Eight since 2002 is a total that is first nationally.
