Anytime that Iowa State and Iowa play, whether it's in Ames or Iowa City, it's a reason for the state to stop down for a day where it's Cardinal and Gold vs. Black and Old Gold.
That will happen Saturday as the Cyclones visit the Hawkeyes for a 2:30 p.m. game. Iowa State will try to win in Kinnick Stadium for the first time since 2002 and maintain control of the CyHawk Trophy. The Cyclones beat Iowa in triple overtime last season, a victory that set off wild celebrations in Jack Trice Stadium.
Pictures of that game plus an empty trophy case have been constant reminders for Iowa players. And some Iowa State players are reminded of the rivalry when they walk around campus and see students wearing Hawkeye gear.
"It's a little punch to the jaw if you are a student here and you don't support your own team," Iowa State linebacker A.J. Klein told the Ames Tribune.
"People have their own freedom," Cyclones safety Jacques Washington said, "but if you are going to wear an Iowa shirt I say go to Iowa. It irritates me."
The rivalry brings thousands of fans to either city that hosts the game. This weekend around Iowa City, finding a hotel room was next to impossible.
The annual FryFest, honoring former Iowa coach Hayden Fry, draws about 20,000 people to nearby Coralville. Also adding to the congestion and the paucity of hotel rooms is Friday's campaign rally in Iowa City by President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden. The Obama/Biden appearance will take place outside the office of Iowa president Sally Mason.
"I won't have any easier access to campus than anyone else," she said. "I can't recall this much chaos. But it's organized chaos."
Which is also a good way to discuss an in-state rivalry like Iowa State vs. Iowa.
