The Kansas women's track team made
history over the weekend at the Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships.
The Jayhawks won the team title with 105.5 points, the first conference title
in women's program history and the first for KU since men won the Big Eight
Conference indoor title in 1983.
"Everyone did a great job today," KU
coach Stanley Redwine said. "We kew it would take a total team effort and
that's what happened for us. This is just a result of a lot of effort paying
off. The coaches have done a great job helping the kids. The athletes have
stepped up. We've been working hard and now all that work has finally paid
off."
Senior Andrea Geubelle won the triple
jump for the second consecutive indoor title and senior Francine Simpson placed
third in the event. On Saturday, Simpson successfully defended her indoor long
jump title.
Junior Diamond Dixon defended
her Big 12 title in the 400 meters. In the final Dixon used her signature
strong final kick to outpace the field down the final 50 meters to earn the
victory with a season-best time of 52.52.
Senior Paris Daniels made school
history as she became the first Jayhawk to win the 200 meters at the Big 12
Indoor Championships. She ran a personal best 23.15 in qualifying and ran 23.29
in the final.
Sophomore Lindsay Vollmer won the
pentathlon, breaking her own school record by finishing with 4,123 points. Alena
Krechyk won the weight throw, her second title in that event in the last three
years. She became the first Jayhawk
to win two conference championships in the throws at both the indoor and
outdoor league events.
