In its first-round victory over TCU, No.
7 seed Texas had a 35-19 edge in bench points. Over the last two games, the
Longhorns' reserves have scored 85 points; the starters have scored 56.
Texas defeated the Horned Frogs 70-57.
Julien Lewis scored a game-high 19 points off the bench while fellow reserve
Sheldon McClellan added 12.
"Coach
asked us to be aggressive when we come in," said Lewis, who made four of seven
3-point attempts. "We gotta go in and do our jobs. The starters, they're going
in, they need to do their job for us, it's got to carry over to the team. The
bench has got to come in and do what the starters do."
The victory evened UT's record at 16-16
headed into Thursday's quarterfinal game with No. 2 seed Kansas State. The
Longhorns' season of struggle has contributed to its deep bench.
"I don't
know if we've got a bench," Texas coach Rick Barnes said. "We've got 11
starters. Every guy I started at some point in time because of different
circumstances throughout the year. But I do think that we're figuring some
things out with a full rotation."
