Oklahoma now joins the group of teams
who are sweating. When the NCAA Tournament bracket is announced Sunday, the
Sooners will be on the bubble. True, it's better than where OU was last year
when its record precluded post-season play.
"Obviously a lot of it depends on upsets
and other games," said Oklahoma coach Lon Kruger, who could become the first
coach to lead five different teams to the NCAA Tournament. "But I'd like to
think this group's deserved an opportunity."
The Sooners went 11-7 in Big 12 play but
finished 20-11 thanks to Thursday's 73-66 loss to Iowa State in the
quarterfinals of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Men's Championship. Oklahoma led by 12
points with 7:42 remaining but couldn't close the deal.
OU has lost three of its last five. The
Sooners let a 22-point second-half lead at Texas slip away in an overtime loss
and then closed the season with a loss at last-place TCU.
"We're
always going to be nervous about it," Oklahoma senior Romero Osby said of the
team's bubble status. "But you can't really worry about it. But we hope we're
in. We think we should be in. But it's not about us, it's about the committee
and what they feel. And we have lost two straight games, so they're going to
look at that. But hopefully we're still able to make it."
