Oklahoma is mourning the death of former quarterback
Steve Davis, who died Sunday in a private plane crash in South Bend, Ind. Davis
was one of just three quarterbacks to win back-to-back national titles in last
40 years. While Davis was running the Wishbone for coach Barry Switzer and OU,
he was 32-1-1 as a starter and the Sooners won 28 straight games at one point.
Davis, a native of Sallisaw who lived in Tulsa, was
known for his strong Christian faith. Switzer choked back tears when he talked
to the Tulsa World Sunday night.
"Steve was one of those kids that no one wanted,"
Switzer said. "He was one of the last guys that got recruited. He was last team
(as a freshman at OU) and ended up winning two national championships and was a
three-year starter. He believed in himself when no one else did."
