Four from Big 12 Named Louisville Slugger Preseason All-Americans
December 23, 2013
Ross Kivett (Kansas State), Jake Matthys (Kansas State), Brandon Finnegan (TCU) and Harrison Musgrave (West Virginia) have earned preseason Louisville Slugger All-America honors, as chosen by Collegiate Baseball.

Kivett, the reigning Big 12 Player of the Year, was chosen as a first team selection, while Musgrave, the 2013 Big 12 Pitcher of the Year, is a second team honoree. Both players earned the same distinctions from the NCBWA earlier this month. Finnegan and Matthys are third team selections.

Kivett is coming off a season in which he earned three All-American designations and helped K-State earn its first conference title in 80 years. The second baseman batted .360 with 22 extra-base hits and 26 stolen bases as well as led the Big 12 in hits (94) and runs (57). For his efforts, Kivett was named to the ABCA/Rawlings All-America Second Team, Baseball America All-America Third Team and Collegiate Baseball Louisville Slugger All-America Third Team.

In 24 Big 12 games last season, Kivett batted .376 with seven extra-base hits, 10 RBI and 10 stolen bases, helping him also garner a spot on the All-Big 12 First Team. After earning the Manhattan Regional MVP award and helping K-State reach its first Super Regional, Kivett was selected by the Cleveland Indians in the 10th round of the MLB First-Year Player Draft, but the native of Broadview Heights, Ohio did not sign and chose to return to K-State for his senior season.

A native of Nutter Fort, W.Va., Musgrave went 9-1 with a 2.17 ERA and three complete games in 2013. In 95.1 innings of work, Musgrave struck out 81 batters and allowed just 65 hits. He was named the Big 12 Pitcher of the Year and honored as a Louisville Slugger Second Team All-American.

A 2013 Big 12 honorable mention performer, Finnegan led the Horned Frogs with 86 strikeouts in 79.1 innings pitched last season. In 16 appearances, he posted a 3.18 ERA and held opponents to a .257 batting average against. Finnegan spent the summer representing the USA as a member of the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team. He went 3-1 with a 1.14 ERA in six appearances with the national team. Baseball America recently tagged Finnegan as the 13th ranked prospect for the upcoming 2014 MLB draft.

Matthys, the 2013 Big 12 Freshman of the Year, posted a 9-2 record last season with nine saves in 34 games. The relief pitcher finished his rookie season with a 2.05 ERA and 44 strikeouts in 61.3 innings pitched.
