Mahomes, Joseph and Grant Receive First Big 12 Football Weekly Honors

Texas Tech teammates Patrick Mahomes and Jakeem Grant, along with West Virginia’s Karl Joseph were selected the season’s first Big 12 Football Players of the Week by a panel of media that covers the Conference. Mahomes (offense) earned his second career honor while Joseph (defense) and Grant (special teams) were recognized for the first time.

Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week
Patrick Mahomes, Texas Tech, QB, So, Whitehouse, Texas
Patrick Mahomes led the Big 12 in total offense (473 yards), yards passing (425) and passes completed (33) in Texas Tech’s 59-45 win over Sam Houston State. He completed a career-high 33 of 53 passes for 425 yards and four touchdowns, with 322 of those yards in the first half. Mahomes also ran for a career-high 48 yards on five carries with a career-long of 24 yards. He has now thrown for 300 or more yards and four or more touchdown passes in four-consecutive games.

 Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week
Karl Joseph, West Virginia, S, Sr, Orlando, Fla.
Karl Joseph made a game-high eight tackles, including seven solo stops in West Virginia’s 44-0 shutout over Georgia Southern. He also intercepted a career-best three passes, all in the third quarter, and recovered a fumble. Joseph’s three interceptions were the most by one player in a game since 1994.   

Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week
Jakeem Grant, Texas Tech, WR/KR, Sr, Mesquite, Texas
Jakeem Grant leads the Big 12 in all-purpose yardage (210 yards) and kick return average (45.3 yards) after Texas Tech’s win over Sam Houston State. He scored two touchdowns with his first career rushing touchdown in the first quarter and a 94-yard kickoff return in the second quarter. It marked the third time in Grant’s career to return a kickoff for a score and moved him into first place in TTU history for most career kickoff return touchdowns. It was the Red Raiders’ first kickoff return touchdown since the 2013 Holiday Bowl. Grant’s 136 kick return yards elevated him into third place for career kickoff return yards with a current 1,288 yards. He also added six catches for 71 yards on the day.
