Soccer Championship Tiebreaker

In case of ties between teams - for seeding in the championship - the following tiebreaker system will be used:

If two teams are tied:

1) Head-to-head results between tied teams (skip if did not play each other);

2) Points earned versus common conference opponents.

3) Most wins versus common conference opponents

4) Goal differential against common conference opponents using goals scored minus goals scored against (GS-GA=Goal Differential);

5) Goals scored versus common conference opponents.

*6) Win-Loss record of the two teams tied versus highest seeded common conference opponent and proceeding through entire standings, if necessary.

*7) Goal differential versus highest seeded common opponent and proceeding through entire standings, if necessary.

*8) Goals scored versus highest seeded common opponent and proceeding through entire standings, if necessary.

9) The team with the fewest number of points by an accumulation of yellow and red cards throughout the Conference season would be the higher seeded team.  A team would accumulate one point for each yellow card and two points for each red card.

10) If two teams remain tied, the higher seed would be chosen by draw. In the event of a draw, the following procedure will be used:

  1. The draw will be conducted virtually, in public or with media attendance.
  2. Institutions involved in the drawing have the right to have a local representative in attendance at the drawing;
  3. A single slip of paper for each institution (with name or logo) will be placed into a container and will be drawn in order of seeding from highest to lowest.

* When comparing tied teams and arriving at another group of tied teams, use each team’s head-to-head conference game results against the tied teams as a group, prior to the group’s tie-breaking procedures

In the event all Conference games cannot be completed, steps (2) through (9) would use per match averages for each step.

If three or more teams are tied in points, steps (2) through (9) will be followed to determine the seeds of the tied teams.  If at any point the multiple-team tie is reduced to two teams, the two-team tiebreaking procedures will be applied, following steps (1) through (9). In the event all Conference games cannot be completed, steps (2) through (9) would use per match averages for each step.
