Caddick and Jones Named Athletes of the Week

Baylor 400-meter runner George Caddick and Kansas State pentathlete Akela Jones have been named the male and female Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week. Caddick raced to a first-place finish in the 400m and Jones nearly eclipsed the NCAA pentathlon record en route to their respective honors. The win marks the first weekly award for Caddick, while Jones took home the honor twice in 2015 on her way to earning Co-Performer of the Year.

BIG 12 TRACK & FIELD MALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
George Caddick, Baylor, 400m & 4x400m relay, Jr., Manchester, UK
Caddick made his season debut in the 400 meters count by running what was at the time the No. 1 mark in the nation for the current indoor season. He captured the Rod McCravy Memorial 400-meter event title in Lexington, Kentucky with a personal-best tying time of 46.54. The mark ended up being the second-fastest time in the country for the year and is the fastest quartermile in the Big 12. Caddick also ran the anchor leg for Baylor’s 4x400-meter relay, finishing only .33 seconds behind Florida with a time of 3:05.90. The mark is currently third-best in the nation and the best time in the Big 12. It is also the fastest time turned in by a BU quartet since 2011 when Whitney Prevost, Zwede Hewitt, Drew Seale and Marcus Boyd placed second at the NCAA Championships in 3:05.42.

BIG 12 TRACK & FIELD FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Akela Jones, Kansas State, Pentathlon, Sr., St. Michael, Barbados
Jones came up just 35 points shy of the collegiate record in the event with a career-best 4,643 points, giving her the second-best score in college history and the best-ever score by a collegian in the month of January. The senior from St. Michael, Barbados soared to a career-best and then-collegiate-leading 6.64m (21-9 1/2) in the long jump and an indoor career-best 2:25.63 in the 800-meter finale to make her just the second collegian to break the 4600-point barrier. As the 2016 season stands, Jones is the collegiate leader in both the pentathlon and the high jump, is No. 2 in the long jump, and is No. 4 in the 60-meter hurdles. Per the IAAF, she’s the world leader in the pentathlon, No. 3 in the long jump, No. 7 in the high jump and No. 16 in the 60 hurdles. Jones was also named the USTFCCA National Athlete of the Week this week for the second time this month.
