Cowboys Take Care Of Auburn As Big 12 Wins Challenge

Auburn, Ala.- Key free throws down the stretch led Oklahoma State to a 74-63 win against Auburn at the Auburn Arena on Saturday in the final game of the Big 12/SEC Challenge.

After a Jeffrey Carroll three extended the Oklahoma State lead to 67-57 late in the game, the Cowboys made their final six free throws the last 1:28 of the game to win its first road game of the season.

Jawun Evans once again led the way for the Cowboys. He finished with 21 points, seven rebounds and five assists.

In the first half, the Cowboys couldn't have asked for a much better start after an Evans' three 14 seconds into the game, and Leyton Hammonds quickly followed it with one of his own to give Oklahoma State a 6-2 lead.

But the quick start wasn't done there, as a Jeff Newberry dunk gave the Cowboys a 10-2 lead with 18:18 left till halftime.

Hammonds played a vital role on the offensive end early one, as his jumper gave Oklahoma State a 15-8 lead with 15:47 remaining. He scored eight of the Cowboys first 15 points.

A pair of Carroll threes less than a minute apart gave Oklahoma State a 21-11 lead with 13:24 remaining until halftime. The Cowboys shot well from behind the arc early on, starting five-of-eight from behind the three-point line.

Oklahoma State would eventually head into the second media timeout of the first half on a 9-0 run and a 24-11 lead thanks to a Chris Olivier three-point play after he was fouled on his layup.

The Cowboys were also successful on the defensive end from the start, holding Auburn to four-of-18 shooting to start the game.

A Tyree Griffin offensive rebound allowed Oklahoma State to hold the ball for the final shot of the half, and the Cowboys took advantage. Griffin was eventually fouled on his three-point attempt, and made all three to give the Cowboys a 40-31 lead at halftime.

The Cowboys continued their success early in the second half, and led 48-37 at the first media timeout of the half with 15:08 left.

After a 10-2 Auburn run late in the half, Evans' drive and finish off a difficult runner extend the Cowboy lead back to 60-52 with 4:28 remaining.

The Oklahoma State bench played a big part in the victory, outscoring the Auburn bench 26-6 over the course of the game.

The Cowboys led for all but the first 14 seconds of the game when it was tied at zero.

Kareem Canty led the way for Auburn with 21 points.

Alongside Evans, Oklahoma State also had double-digit scoring from Hammonds and Olivier. Hammonds finished with 10 points and six rebounds, while Olivier finished with 16.
