Okolo and Adkins Take Home Weekly Awards

Texas runner Courtney Okolo and Texas Tech high jumper Bradley Adkins have been named this week’s Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week. Okolo, the 2015 indoor 400-meter national champion, posted the fastest time in the world this season with a 51.16 second finish in the 400m to win at the Husker Invitational, and Adkins posted a Big 12 leading 2.20-meter/7’ 2.5” high jump to win at the New Mexico Classic. This marks the first time Adkins, the Big 12 Outdoor high jump champion in 2014, has received a weekly honor. In addition to Okolo’s 2015 400-meter indoor national championship, she also boasts a 2014 outdoor 400m national title and four total (three outdoor, one indoor) athlete of the week honors prior to this one.

BIG 12 TRACK & FIELD MALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Bradley Adkins, Texas Tech, high jump, Sr., Idalou, Texas
Adkins continued his streak of improving in every meet this season in the high jump to earn the win on Friday at the New Mexico Classic in Albuquerque. Adkins had the event won after sailing over the bar at 2.17m/7’ 1.5”, but he wasn’t done there. He then cleared 2.20m/7’ 2.5” to blow away the rest of the collegiate competition, which included 2016 NCAA leader Randall Cunningham. Adkins now leads the Big 12 conference and is ranked fourth in the NCAA in the event.

BIG 12 TRACK & FIELD FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Courtney Okolo, Texas, 400m, Sr., Carrollton, Texas
Okolo stormed her way around the track at the 41st Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational to show that she was ready to defend her NCAA crown, coming across the finish line in a world-leading 51.16 seconds in her first 400-meter race of the season. Okolo bested former teammate and now professional runner for Nike, Ashley Spencer, who ran 51.56. Okolo’s time also was a Bob Devaney Center facility record and Husker Invitational meet record. The time was just .04 off Okolo’s personal best time set at the NCAA Championships last year. Okolo was also recognized by the USTFCCCA for her performance as the NCAA Division I Women’s National Athlete of the Week.
