TCU Advances At Big 12 Championship
November 04, 2016

Kansas City, Mo. - The title match of the 2016 Big 12 Championship is set as No. 7 seed TCU has advanced after a 3-2 overtime victory over No. 3 seed Baylor at Swope Soccer Village in Kansas City. The Horned Frogs will play No. 1 seed West Virginia in the title contest on Sunday.

For the second straight year, Baylor and TCU needed extra time to decide the winner. After going to penalty kicks in 2015, this year's matchup was determined when senior Meghan Murphy converted a goal with 2:51 left in the first overtime off a corner kick from fellow senior Michelle Prokof. It was the second goal of the season for Murphy.

The first score of the matchup came less than eight minutes into the match as sophomore Julie James found the back of the net after a pass from fellow sophomore Amanda Hoglund. It was third goal of the year for James, while Hoglund notched her second assist of 2016.

Hoglund gave BU a 2-0 advantage at the 25:20 mark after converting an assist from junior Precious Akanyirige. It marked the third goal of the year for Hoglund and the first assist for Akanyirige.

TCU cut the lead in half after junior Allison Ganter converted on a penalty kick in the 72nd minute. It was her eighth goal of the season. Less than two minutes later, sophomore Faith Carter had the equalizer when she recorded her seventh score of the 2016 campaign.

The Sunday title game will be the first time TCU will play in the championship final since 2012. That year marked the only other time in the history of the event that the Frogs, who were the No. 8 seed that season, advanced to the final of the Big 12 Soccer Championship.

West Virginia and TCU have met twice previously in Big 12 Championship history, with the teams splitting the matchups. In 2012, the Horned Frogs upset No. 1 WVU in the quarterfinals, 2-0. In 2014, it was the Mountaineers posting a 2-1 victory.
