Big 12 champion Oklahoma highlights six Conference teams that will compete in 2016-17 bowl games. The Big 12 has placed at least six teams in postseason each year since 1997-98.
The No. 7 Sooners will face No. 14 Auburn in the Allstate Sugar Bowl on January 2 to mark the Big 12’s fifth appearance in a CFP New Year’s Bowl in the three years of the structure. OU is making its 50th bowl appearance and 18th-consecutive. The only other meeting between Oklahoma and Auburn was in the Sugar Bowl following the 1971 season when the Sooners came away with a 40-22 win.
The Big 12 bowl season kicks off on December 27 when Baylor plays Boise State in the Motel 6 Cactus Bowl. The Bears are making their seventh-straight bowl appearance and 23rd overall. The two teams will meet for the first time.
Two games are scheduled on December 28 as No. 16 West Virginia takes on Miami in the Russell Athletic Bowl and Kansas State faces Texas A&M in the AdvoCare V100 Texas Bowl. WVU’s bowl appearance is its 35th while K-State makes its 20th and seventh-consecutive. Miami holds a 16-3 series advantage over WVU. TAMU has an 8-7 lead in the series against the Wildcats, however K-State has won the last three games from 2008-11.
In another matchup of ranked teams, No. 12 Oklahoma State and No. 10 Colorado will square off in the Valero Alamo Bowl on December 29. The Cowboys will play in their 27th bowl and 11th-straight. CU holds a 26-19-1 series advantage, but Oklahoma State has won three of the last four, including a 31-28 victory in 2009 when the two teams last met.
TCU will travel to its 31st bowl game when it plays Georgia at the AutoZone Liberty Bowl on December 30. UGA has won the three previous meetings with the last in 1988.
