The 2018 Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championship continued with the Men’s and Women’ Multi-Events wrapping up, as well as field event finals and running event preliminaries. The K-State men and K-State women lead team standings, with one more day of events remaining.
The three-day championship will conclude on Sunday, May 13 at the Clyde Hart Track & Field Stadium in Waco, Texas. Events will being at 2:30 p.m. CT, with the final awards presentation scheduled to take place at 9:00 p.m. CT.
Texas junior Steele Wasik successfully defended his 2017 title in the Men’s Pentathlon with a score of 7,588, edging out K-State sophomore Aaron Booth by 80 points. Wasik finished in the top three in eight of ten events, including first place finishes in Shot Put, High Jump, 110 m Hurdles, and Javelin.
Texas Tech junior Kaylee Hinton wrapped up the Women’s Heptathlon with wins in the Long Jump, High Jump, and 200 m on the way to her 5,793 point victory, 131 points ahead of second-place finisher Ashtin Zamzow of Texas.
Field Event Finals Notes
Oklahoma’s Vernon Turner set the mark in Men’s High Jump with the second-best outdoor jump in the nation this season. The freshman cleared 2.28 m to pass Texas Tech senior Trey Culver in second.
Another dominant freshman this season, Adrian Piperi of Texas, took home his first Big 12 Outdoor Championship title in the Men’s Shot Put with his throw of 20.19 m.
In the Women’s Long Jump, Iowa State’s Jhoanmy Luque’s jump of 6.49 m beat all competition to deliver Iowa State’s first ever Big 12 title in the event.
Kansas discus thrower Alexranda Emilianov set a new school mark of 60.24 m on the way to her first Big 12 title, and KU’s first discus title since 2014.
