Texas Tech and Kansas State Claim Big 12 Titles

The Texas Tech men and Kansas State women won the team titles at the 2018 Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championship. Sprinters Divine Oduduru of Texas Tech and Kiana Horton of Baylor were named high point scorers of the meet.

 

Kansas State claimed back-to-back outdoor titles for the second time in school history. The Wildcats also won in 2001 and 2002. This is the third team championship for the Red Raiders, and first since 2014. The Texas Tech men swept both the Big 12 Indoor and Outdoor championships this season.

 

Running Event Notes

Freshman Aaliyah Miller of Baylor set a Big 12 Championship meet record in the women’s 800 m finals with a time of 2:02.41, surpassing a previous mark of 2:03.60 set by Ashley Wysong of Missouri in 2000.

 

Texas Tech freshman Norman Grimes ran the men’s 400 m hurdles in 49.38 seconds, the second-fastest time in the NCAA and the fastest time in the Big 12 Conference this season.

 

Texas sophomore Rushelle Burton set a Clyde Hart Track & Field stadium record with a time of 12.65 in the 100 m hurdles, which was just .02 seconds off the Big 12 Championship meet record set in 2006. Texas junior John Burt also set a stadium record in the men’s 100 m hurdles at 13.56 seconds.

 

Field Event Notes

Hussain Al Hizam broke his own Big 12 Championship meet record in the pole vault with a leap of 5.63 m. He is the third vaulter to win back-to-back titles in Big 12 history.

Oklahoma’s Jessica Woodard set a stadium record in women’s shot put with a throw of 18.07m, while Texas Tech’s Eric Kicinski set a stadium record with a throw of 59.19 m in the men’s discus.
