Iowa State’s Tyrese Haliburton and Oklahoma State’s Isaac Likekele were named to USA Basketball’s 12-man roster for the U19 2019 FIBA World Cup.
Haliburton is the first Cyclone since Craig Brackins in 2009 to earn a spot on a USA Basketball roster. During his freshman campaign in the 2018-19 season, the Oshkosh, Wisconsin, native played in all 35 games for ISU, earning a start in all but one game. Overall, he led all freshman in the Big 12 in minutes per game (33.2) and ranked fifth in the Conference in assists per game (3.6).
Likekele is the fourth Cowboy to represent USA Basketball at the FIBA U19 World Cup, joining Matt Clark (1979), Marcus Smart (2013) and Jawun Evans (2015). In his rookie season with the Cowboys, Likekele recorded the third-best assists per game average (3.9) and joined Smart as the only Cowboy freshmen to ever produce 120+ assists and 40+ steals.
Kansas State’s Bruce Weber was appointed the head coach of the U19 squad, spearheading the Americans on a global stage for the first time in his career.
Competition for the global tournament is set to take place in Heraklion, Greece and will run from Saturday, June 29, through Sunday, July 7.
All games can be seen live for free on FIBA’s YouTube page.
